READ CHARLESTON'S
Racial Disparities Report
We highly recommend reading The State of Racial Disparities in Charleston County, South Carolina, 2000-2015, by the College of Charleston's Race and Social Justice Initiative.
The researchers and authors of this report used a racial equity lens, a tool that has been used in many fields to identify injustice and structural barriers people of color face in education, employment, housing, healthcare, and philanthropy. By doing so, they were able to identify polices, practices, and structural arrangements of power that maintain a social environment where black residents are disproportionately impacted by pervasive inequities on a daily basis, not only in the areas above but in policing, incarceration, and racialized violence as well.
