WE'RE EMPOWERING YOUNG WOMEN
with our SheStrong program
SheStrong is an ongoing program for high school students who seek to engage with their communities and develop as leaders and changemakers. Our goal is to equip these young women and their allies with the tools to begin advocating for themselves and others.
Our core values and areas of focus include: GROWTH | Increasing access to opportunities and leadership roles for young girls and women AWARENESS | Amplifying the voices of women DIVERSITY | Removing barriers faced by all women SELF WORTH | Building self esteem SKILLS | Self defense New for 2024-25! SheStrong "GOTV: Youth in Action" Focus Details coming soon!
2023-24! SheStrong "Healthcare Career" Focus During our 2023-24 year, SheStrong focused on the GROWTH and DIVERSITY platform points above, with a focus on healthcare careers. Supported by a partnership with HCA Healthcare, our SheStrong Healthcare Career Module will enable SheStrong members to explore a healthcare career track where they can serve as leaders and changemakers. One goal? To create a pipeline of future healthcare professionals that reflect our region's diverse population. Another goal is to place more young women into the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) pipeline, a high-paying field where women and people of color have historically been vastly underrepresented. Components of this year's healthcare program include: DISCOVER | SheStrong members will explore a variety of professions available within healthcare LEARN | SheStrong members will complete a curriculum with in-person career readiness and STEM components GAIN | Each SheStrong member will obtain a personalized career path in one of four healthcare categories * OBTAIN | Community partnerships will allow SheStrong members to obtain mentors, training, and/or certification The four healthcare career categories include: STEM, Clinical, Allied Health, and Administration. See the sidebar for details on the program's curriculum >> SheStrong aces our 2022 Toastmasters Jr. program This summer, select SheStrong members worked on developing their public speaking, communication, and leadership skills with our Toastmasters Jr. program.
They graduated from the program after an outstanding presentation by each one on a work of art of their choice at The Gibbes Museum of Art. Check out the pics! Check out their daily October #WWV Instagram posts and follow-up posts on domestic violence, since the need for awareness (sadly) doesn't end. Included in their posts were statistics about domestic violence, self-care tips, a video of the poem "Victim to Survivor", a book recommendation, a link to a virtual #WWV event held by YWCA USA, and an interview with Breath to Blossom, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping survivors of domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and sex trafficking heal. SheStrong speaks at 2020 social justice advocacy event On June 30, 2020, two of our SheStrong co-founders and council members, Maya Green and Courtenay White, spoke at the Social Justice Racial Equity Collaborative’s “A Conversation on Youth Social Justice." As panelists and next-generation change agents, they give gave their perspective on the skills young leaders need to cultivate to effectively lead advocacy efforts that make a difference—not only for youth but for communities across the country.
