WE'RE ELIMINATING RACISM
with our Racial Equity & Inclusion Phase II training
Our Racial Equity & Inclusion (REI) Phase II workshops build on Phase I and help emerging racial equity leaders identify their own struggles and challenges in terms of the racial equity analysis done in Phase I.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Phase II participants must have attended Phase I twice in order to attend Phase II. This is a requirement of the Racial Equity Institute. You need pay only once to attend Phase I, however. Your second attendance is complimentary. Following an in-depth review of Phase I concepts, participants examine internalized oppression, feelings of inferiority and superiority, racial identity development, and how personal and organizational practices are affected by these feelings. The consistent and predictable outcomes of organizations and institutions find their roots in structures supported and maintained by individuals who have internalized narratives of inequity and justice. "Diagnosis determines treatment" is a frequent statement in Phase I training. In Phase II, participants practice looking at problems through an equity lens and develop an appreciation for the power of narrative. The last and perhaps most important and challenging exercise of Phase II is developing a personal and organizational vision. No one alive today has ever lived a moment of their lives in an equitable world. We do not know what it looks like. REI believes in the power of vision and the imperative of a clear and common vision to approach the work of equity. Participants engage in much-needed practice to develop a vision of their workplace equity work. Phase II is recommended for people who are ready to commit to rolling up their sleeves and doing the work. It is slower, goes deeper, and explores the complex integration of racial identity. These local organizations have shown they stand against racism with us! We appreciate the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce for donating meeting space at its new Park Circle location at 4922 O'Hear Avenue, Suite 101, North Charleston 29405 for our REI workshops, and Apple Spice for providing our REI workshop participants with nutritious, delicious lunches at a special rate. We're also seeking breakfast, coffee, and corporate sponsors. If you're interested in helping us eliminate racism in our region, please contact our training coordinator, Shamara White, at swhite@ywca-charlestonsc.org. Thank you!

WHAT PHASE II PARTICIPANTS SAY
PRICELESS
"Phase II is everything. I've practiced including Phase I data and concepts in conversations for months. Now I can include the comprehensive strategies of actually organizing. Priceless."

ESSENTIAL
"Phase II is a MUST! It promotes a deeper reflection of racial equity, encourages self-reflection, and provides the basic tools necessary to operate more from System II thinking. After participating in Phase II, it has revived my passion for studying, understanding, training, and sharing more about racial equity and its impact on every aspect of our lives. As a community educator, information learned will help us collectively build and rebuild our communities to be more equitable."

VALUABLE FOR WHITE PEOPLE TOO
"For well-meaning white people striving towards anti-racism, this training will help you understand how to decide where you should focus your efforts. You will find that most of the time you should not take the lead but should follow the lead of minority women and men instead. This training will give you some evaluation tools to help you move forward towards anti-racism."

DIGS DEEPER
"REI Phase II provides an opportunity to dig deeper and explore intricate aspects of human nature that perpetuate stereotypes, fear, mistrust, and division related of the construct of race... all of which can be avoided and mitigated through the power of understanding. This workshop helped me to recognize that I am a work in progress, that I can make a difference, and that I can begin to affect the groundwater."

GET READY TO ACT
"Attendees of REI Phase II must know that participation comes with the demand to act. Don't be a tourist in this training, just coming to learn about the language, attributes, and culture of the oppressive systems governing our society. Yes, you will receive a full context for learning, but you must be positioned to act on that new knowledge. Come prepared to arm yourself with tools for liberation and resistance."
